Back in the Mara, Governor's Camp

Governor's Camp, Masai Mara

Wow, I can't believe I am back in the Mara so quickly. This trip report will be mostly done via a vlog as I didn't take many notes because it was a last minute trip. The overview is that my 8 days was spent between Governor's Camp and Bateleur Camp with 4 nights in each property. I chose Governor's because they had an excellent sale rate on due to the low season and I happened to secure a private car for 2 out of the 4 days. This allowed me to concentrate my time with the Marsh Pride which was my reason for staying at Governor's. I had used the BBC's Big Cat Diary in my lessons when teaching the little boy I worked with in Kazakhstan and visiting the pride was the ultimate way to document the pride personally and to send back the videos via WhatsApp on a daily basis to the 7 year old patiently waiting for them each day.

Where I Stayed: Governor's Camp, Masai Mara

Governor's Camp is an institution in the Mara. It is home to many of the documentary crews coming down to take amazing footage of the animals that are readily available close by including the BBC. The camp is very large (40 tents) which is something that I don't like but I do choose to stay only during the low season and have only encountered a maximum of 6 tents being occupied. The tents are well equiped with a lovely large bed, indoor seating, a desk, a large bathroom with running hot water showers, toilets etc and a balconey with chairs for two outside. I personally prefer the tents that overlook the Mara Plains so that I can see any animals walking around.

The food is normally a buffet style for breakfast and lunch with good selections. The dinnners are normally seated and offer three courses with two varieties and a vegetarian option. Drinks apart from water cost extra.

I love the location of Governor's but I find the camp too big, the safari cars needing an upgrade and the staff although being attentive they lack enthusiasm. The tents do need an upgrade compared to other properties in the area and the price that is charged during the mid/high season. If you travel during the low season then Governor's offer an excellent location, excellent animal sightings especially of the Marsh Pride and great prices if you check their website for special offers.

Enjoy!
